- Quick 'n dirty
- A classic hill training ride NE out of the city of Vernon to the Silver Star mountain resort.
- Difficulty
- Mostly a good, safe road ride. Some sections don’t have a huge shoulder but traffic speeds are restricted (60kph). Downhill caution is recommended due to some rough pavement and aforementioned speed limit.
Only one day after riding 100 kilometers from Vernon to Rawlings Lake and back I was back in the saddle on my Cervelo. Interestingly I thought this was the ideal day to do a hard training ride to the Silver Star mountain resort that sits over 1200 meters higher than Vernon to the NE. Sometimes I have questionable judgement, I admit. 😀🚴

Just as the day before, I awoke to much thicker smoke than I’d prefer for a day with so much heavy breathing. Put it this way - there’s a reason I wasn’t seeing many other road cyclists out there on my rides. Unfortunately I was there and I wanted to ride so I did it. I’m not sure it was the healthiest decision but here we are. 😮💨🔥
This is one of the easier rides in the area navigation-wise and likely one of the toughest to actually ride thanks to the 1300 meters of elevation gain over ~21 kilometers. Once you get onto 48 avenue just head out of the city to the NE. The road quickly becomes “Silver Star Road”. The road itself goes from smooth with a wide shoulder (and even a parallel bike path) to a fairly rough (still paved) surface with no shoulder. Flip through the slideshow for more details on the ride.
